One of the small but highly welcome improvements in the upcoming iPhone operating system focuses on how Apple handles pasting content. Testers of the current iOS 27 developer beta have discovered a new, system-wide "Copy & Paste" preview located directly above the keyboard. Currently, pasting from the clipboard under iOS is somewhat tedious: you have to position the cursor, long-press, and select "Paste" from the pop-up menu. In the future, this process will be significantly simplified for various types of app content. Similar to how iOS currently handles two-factor authentication codes, a single tap on the preview bar will be enough to insert text or media into an iMessage, a note, or any other text input field.
Smart Previews and Source Tracking The new feature not only displays a snippet of the clipboard content but also indicates its source app, helping users avoid accidental pastes. For instance, if you copy text from Safari, the top of the keyboard will show a larger text preview accompanied by a "Paste from Safari" label. At the moment, the beta handles standard text, links (though some currently suffer from a bug where website metadata isn't pulled), and images in a small thumbnail view. It is easily possible that Apple will expand the supported formats before launch; however, it remains unclear whether developers will get an SDK to hook in their own custom data types.
Since 2018, iOS has included a feature that autofills 2FA codes, initially only from SMS and later expanded to the Mail app. This workflow has proven to be a massive time-saver. While it hasn't been officially tested yet whether this new clipboard functionality will also arrive on iPadOS, the probability is very high.
iOS 27 Focuses on System Refinement Apple previously announced that iOS 27 would focus less on massive overhaul features and more on minor refinements and optimizations. Following the major—and heavily criticized—"Liquid Glass" redesign, this shift is widely considered a necessary step. Furthermore, Apple claims to have "significantly" boosted system responsiveness, largely thanks to a newly implemented CPU scheduler.
Other notable additions coming with iOS 27 include a dual-camera mode for FaceTime, a built-in recovery mode for iPhones, and a long list of promised bug fixes.
